Zbigniew W. Raś was awarded his M. Sc. in Mathematics and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Warsaw University. He started his career as an Assistant Professor at the Warsaw University in 1974 and has also worked in the Computer Science Department at the Jagiellonian University (1976-78). His next affiliations include Research Associate Position at the Columbia University (New York), Assistant Professor Position at the University of Florida (Gainesville), and Associate Professor Position at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville). Since 1988 he is a Full Professor at the University of North Carolina (Charlotte). He was also holding various visiting positions in Sweden (the Linkoping University), Germany (the University of Bonn), Italy (IASI-CNR), Spain (the University of Palma de Mallorca), Poland (the Warsaw University of Technology), and Lockheed Reseach Laboratory at Palo Alto. He published more than 100 papers in journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings in the area of intelligent information systems. He authored one book and edited 35 books including special journal issues. He is the general chairman of ISMIS (International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems) symposium. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems (Kluwer) and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Fundamenta Informaticae Journal (IOS Press). He received a number of awards including Alcoa Foundation Outstanding Faculty Award (2000) and the COIT Graduate Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award (2003).
